The WVRA sponsors two awards slated towards the amateur radio community: the club’s Ham of the Year award and the Excellence in Amateur Radio award. Nominations are made by club members during the month of December (nomination papers are due by the January meeting), voted by the club at the February meeting, and presented at the annual banquet in March.

WVRA Ham of the Year Award

The Ham of the Year (HOTY) award is an annual award that recognizes the achievements of a WVRA member in the past calendar year.

All WVRA club members in good standing and holding a valid amateur radio license are eligible for the award. Any club member may nominate a candidate for HOTY. Self nomination for the award is also allowed.

Ham of the Year selection is based on one or more of the following criteria:

  • Community Service through WVRA sponsored events.
  • Participation in other WVRA events.
  • Position of responsibility in Amateur Radio (Officer of an organization for hams, repeater and other equipment maintenance, experimentation, net participation or control operator.
  • Helping other hams to setup or maintain their station, mobile or home, antennas, and towers.
  • Elmering or teaching those who wish to become a ham, or to advance in Amateur Radio.
  • On the air operating skills such as polite, helpful and good personality.

Nominations will be accepted on the appropriate form distributed at the December meeting of the WVRA. Nominations sent in should be received by the nomination committee on the appropriate form no later than the January meeting of the new year.

The Award Committee will screen the nominations and submit three to the WVRA members. All members will be Emailed, or mailed a ballot to be filled out and returned to the WVRA before the end of January.

Any nomination received that is not in compliance with the above criteria or not submitted on the official form may be disqualified and not considered for the award.

WVRA Excellence in Amateur Radio Award

The Excellence in Amateur Radio (EAR) Award is an award to recognize the lifetime achievement of an amateur radio operator.

Any amateur radio operator that has had a direct influence on Amateur Radio in Central Wisconsin may be considered for the award. The Nominee need not be a member of the WVRA but must be a licensed Amateur Radio Operator in good standing. A WVRA club member must make the nomination for an candidate to be considered for the EAR award.

Nomination of a Silent Key is permitted if the person became a Silent Key within the last two calendar years, or the Award Committee can accept nomination on individual merit.

Excellence in Amateur Radio award is based on one of more of the following criteria.

Amateur Radio Activities, contributions and Community Service related to Amateur Radio, such as participation in the NTS, Club memberships, Club projects, Club activates, Emergency Services, Elmering, experimentation, Repeater ownership or maintenance of systems, contributions by holding an ARRL position (appointed or elected), or in any way promoted or advanced Amateur Radio. Community Service must be related to Amateur Radio in some way.
